We are delighted to announce this year’s Lord Kerr Essay Competition 2025.

The question for this year is:

Is the UK striking the right balance between national security and the right to privacy?

Lord Kerr Essay Competition 2025 now released: “Privacy vs National Security”

Who can apply?

Open to students registered with UK higher education institutes and recent graduates, pupil barristers, trainee solicitors, those on the SQE, and those who have just started the GDL. In practice, this includes anyone who is not a qualified lawyer in the United Kingdom.

How many words can I write?

A maximum of 2000 words.

When is the deadline?

The 25th July 2025, at 23:59.

What is the marking criteria?

The marking criteria includes:

  • (1) understanding of the topic;
  • (2) originality, original thinking relative to the topic, and strength of ideas;
  • (3) effectiveness in presenting a point-of-view;
  • (4) organisation;
  • (5) writing style, grammar and spelling.

What is the format I should send?

There are no specific requirements as to formatting, though all points should be properly cited. A bibliography is not however required.

Footnotes and the bibliography will not count towards the word count.
