The HRLA is looking for a Bursary Officer to join its Executive Committee and lead the administration and development of the HRLA Bursary Scheme.
The Bursary Scheme is one of the HRLA’s most exciting and impactful initiatives. It has been running since 2006 and has supported many aspiring human rights lawyers who would otherwise have been unable to access valuable work experience because of financial barriers. Over the years, it has helped open doors to practical experience, professional networks and careers in human rights law, and continues to be an important part of the HRLA’s commitment to making the profession more accessible and diverse.
As Bursary Officer, you will have the opportunity to make a tangible difference to the careers of future human rights lawyers, while helping to shape and develop a scheme that is an important part of the HRLA’s commitment to accessibility and diversity within the profession.
What you will do
- Lead the annual bursary process from launch through to award, including managing applications, timelines and guidance.
- Coordinate the shortlisting and selection process with members of the Executive Committee.
- Act as the main point of contact for successful bursary recipients and liaise with placement providers.
- Work with the Treasurer to coordinate bursary payments.
- Help promote the scheme and identify opportunities to develop relationships with new placement providers and sponsors.
- Attend monthly Executive Committee meetings and contribute to wider HRLA initiatives and events.
There is also scope to develop the scheme further, including improving the application process and exploring ways to increase its reach and impact.
About you
We are looking for someone who is organised, proactive and passionate about human rights and access to the profession.
While previous experience of running a bursary or similar scheme is not essential, some project management experience and confidence working independently will be valuable. What matters most is enthusiasm for the scheme and a commitment to helping talented people overcome financial barriers to entering human rights law.
Time commitment and support
This is an unpaid, voluntary role within the HRLA Executive Committee, which is run entirely by volunteers.
The expected commitment is around one hour per week on average across the year, plus attendance at monthly committee meetings. The workload is lighter for much of the year, with the main periods of activity concentrated around the launch of the scheme, the application deadline and the selection process.
You will receive a full handover from the previous Bursary Officer, including the assessment criteria, process map, application materials and other relevant resources.
This is a great opportunity to take ownership of a meaningful HRLA initiative, work with leading organisations and practitioners, and play a direct role in helping the next generation of human rights lawyers get their foot in the door.
